Devolve yourself! Upload your picture to see how you would have looked as, say, an Australopithecus. Freaky!
Funky artist's version of the evolutionary history of the planet. Feel like drawing your own?
Fly through this interactive, gazillion-year map of how all creatures are related, including us. Cool 3-D renderings of ancient critters too.
K-12 curricula, tutorials for adults, countless links, more. A terrific, authoritative site out of Berkeley.
"Darwin-Inspired Learning" programs out of Downe House, Darwin's home. Also a preserves his estate and gardens for the public.
National Center for Science Education. Defending evolution education in schools, plus wonderful educational resources.
Nova television series in 8 parts. Beautiful.
My favorite books on evolution:
For little kids (age 4 to 6-ish)
For mid-size kids (age 7 to 9-ish)
For bigger kids (age 10-ish and up)
Part 2 (...and a few more)
Part 1 (the first 40 books...)
Charlie's Playhouse is evolving.
Charlie's Playhouse was a small business designing and marketing toys that introduce young kids to evolution. It was founded by me (Kate), my two young sons, and "Charlie" Darwin.
The four of us turned out to be great at product design
but lousy at marketing.
So here's the new plan:
License out our products to other manufacturers.
See "Pre-order new evolution toys" to make it happen!
Establish this online community of likeminded people, focused on the Evolution for Kids blog, online resources, children's book recommendations, and other free stuff.
No marketing, yay!
When my two young boys started asking about evolution, I looked around for some evolution-themed toys. How many did I find? None, zero, nada. I could buy fun, colorful things about astronomy, geology, physics, even biology, but not evolution.
And this, my friends, makes me crazy. Even if we accept the sad state of evolution education in the classroom, surely the toy industry could make us some fun stuff to use at home. In the last few years I've taken a stab at filling this void myself (see "Final inventory.")
Evolution for Kids is a gathering place for parents and others who want to inspire children with the vast, dazzling history of life on Earth. Dinosaurs like this guy aren't the half of it, after all.
